AboutA quieter kind of daily check-in.
Balu is a private video check-in app for iOS designed around one idea: most people benefit from a daily moment of honest reflection, but most tools make that moment feel heavy, public, or performative. Balu exists to change that.
Why Balu exists
Journaling apps expect you to write. Social apps expect you to share. Most reflection tools sit somewhere in between, adding complexity until the habit breaks. Balu takes a different approach: open the app, read a thoughtful prompt, tap your mood, and record a private two-minute video. That is the whole flow.
The result is a daily practice that feels more like a conversation with yourself than a chore. There is no audience, no feed, no pressure to perform. Every check-in stays private by default, and you can revisit, save, or delete any recording whenever you choose.
How a check-in works
Each day, Balu presents a guided prompt. Prompts rotate through categories like focus, mindset, and evening reflection, so you never start from a blank page. You can also shuffle for a different question, write your own, or use an AI-generated follow-up prompt with Balu Pro.
Before recording, you choose a mood tag that gives your check-in immediate emotional context. Then you record privately for up to two minutes. The short cap keeps the habit realistic and prevents overthinking. When you are done, the check-in is saved to your personal calendar archive alongside any tasks you completed that day.
Tasks and daily planning
Balu includes a lightweight task system that pairs naturally with video check-ins. Each morning, you can set up to three priorities and add additional tasks. At the end of the day, you review what happened: mark items as done, tried, moved to tomorrow, or dropped. This keeps your days intentional without needing a separate productivity app.
Task outcomes are saved alongside your check-in, so when you open any day in the calendar archive you see both what you felt and what you accomplished. Over time, this builds a personal record that is more honest than a to-do list and more actionable than a diary.
The calendar archive
Every day with a check-in or task outcome becomes part of a scrollable calendar timeline. Open any date to watch your recording, see your mood tag, and review task results. You can save a video to your device or delete a check-in permanently from the day detail view.
The free plan keeps recent check-ins accessible. Balu Pro extends archive access so you can revisit older entries and track patterns over weeks and months.
Balu Pro
Balu is fully usable for free. Balu Pro adds deeper features for people who want more from their daily practice: longer archive access so older check-ins remain available, a daily AI reflection prompt with a seven-day history for recent entries, premium visual themes, and manual control over video recording quality on iOS.
Subscriptions are handled through Apple and can be managed or cancelled at any time in your device settings.
Privacy by design
Balu has no social feed, no sharing features, and no public profiles. Check-ins are stored locally on your device with optional cloud backup for sync, playback, and recovery when signed in. The app uses anonymous authentication by default and does not require personal information to function. Your reflection content stays private to your account and is not used as marketing telemetry.
The website and app use a small first-party analytics set stored in Balu's Supabase project to measure landing views, App Store clicks, and whether critical billing flows are working. Those events are limited to simple campaign and product metadata. Balu does not sell data, serve ads, or build advertising profiles. Full details are available on the privacy and terms page.
Design principles
Balu is built around a few core ideas that guide every feature decision:
- Private by default. No audience, no feed, no sharing layer. Check-ins are yours alone.
- Short by design. Two-minute recordings keep the habit light and sustainable. If it takes more than a few minutes, the friction wins.
- Prompted, not blank. A thoughtful question is easier to answer than a blank page. Prompts reduce the effort of starting.
- Calm over clever. Streaks never punish you for missing a day, and reminders stay gentle. The app is there when you want it.
